Abalone .comOld MacDonald had an abalone farm, eeyie eeyie oh. And boy that old MacDonald sure got really rich, eeyie eeyie oh. In case you haven't already heard, abalone farming is one of the most, if not the most lucrative forms of agriculture on earth, legal forms of agriculture, that is. Running on average about fifty dollars a kilo (for the Black Lipped variety), one such abalone farm fishery in Australia recently boasted $72 million dollars in profits for one year. Not bad for a giant snail that developed a couple of million years ago. Dinosaurs were the first creatures to cut their feet on the abalone's shell while swimming around coral reefs.
Today, an abalone farm is going to be basically a guaranteed successful investment with the right research and management. The worldwide demand for abalone meat and health products has consistently expanded while traditional ocean fisheries have been all but fished out and major restrictions and moratoriums have been passed regarding their harvest, making the abalone farm an essential part of the world economy. Who has a few million to start an abalone farm? That's another question, but with the right know-how and a little patience, it's like owning an underwater goldmine.
