Red Abalone

The Red Abalone is the largest species of abalone in the world. The home of the Red Abalone is the coastline of sunny California. Why is it that California has some of the biggest trees, called Red Woods, and the biggest abalone, Red Abalone? This rose-hued giant mollusk also boasts one of the best meat to shell ratios of all abalones.

It gets it moniker of Red Abalone from the reddish tint of its’ shell, which results from the regular consumption of it’s favorite food, Red Algae. They were once so common, after settlers depleted California’s Sea Otter population (the Red Abalone’s most notorious and enthusiastic natural enemy) to a dwindling pittance through overzealous fur trapping, that they often were seen growing piled on top of each other, stacks of Red Abalone competing for rock or reef space.
